SOAS and the W Charitable Foundation have established an initial 18-month project, based at the Department of Development Studies, to build knowledge and inform current and future policy making around the theme of water in Africa. The project will include:
- A social science research project on the policies that govern water provision through sub-Saharan Africa. This will be designed and carried out by a Professor of Water and Development in Africa, supported by a full time research assistant and a part time project administrator appointed specifically for this purpose.
- A small number of scholarships for students from Africa to pursue either an MSc in Development Studies at SOAS, or distance learning in Environmental Management.
The Department of Development Studies invites applications for one post of Research Officer for the Water in Africa Project, funded by the W Charitable Foundation, starting from 1 September 2008 or as soon as possible thereafter. The Research Officer will contribute to the administration of this research project as part of a team led by a Professor of Water and Development in Africa.
Applicants will have strong quantitative and qualitative skills and experience in managing research projects to their successful completion. The successful candidate will have experience of research relevant to Water in Africa project activities and postgraduate training in development studies or a closely related field. Knowledge of development-orientated theory and policy, specifically applied to the water of field of water and development, and familiarity with the current literature in these areas is also essential along with experience of participating in policy-orientated research in developing countries, especially in sub-Saharan Africa.
