EMMA stands for Erasmus Mundus Mobility for Regional Asia and is part of the Erasmus Mundus External Cooperation Window.

The Erasmus Mundus External Cooperation Window (EM ECW) is a cooperation and mobility scheme in the area of higher education cooperation. The EM ECW objective is to achieve better understanding and mutual enrichment between the European Union and third countries cooperation in the field of higher education through promoting the exchange of persons, knowledge and skills at higher education level. The EMMA programme provides funding opportunities for students, researchers and academic staff to take part in 'mobilities' between the Asian target group countries and the EU.

Fields of study offered by ITC
In general, the EMMA programme offers study scholarships to attend courses, at Bachelor and Master level, pursue PhDs, Post Doctoral research and to facilitate academic staff exchange. Students or scholars can choose from a wide variety of academic fields. Find the fields of study of your interest and click on it to get more detailed information.

Who can apply for a scholarship?
The EU-funded scholarships are available for three types of Regional Asia nationals:

Target Group 1

Students and staff registered in one of the Asian universities that are a member of the consortium.

Target Group 2

Nationals of the third-countries concerned by the geographical lot, registered in a higher education institution of these countries not included in the partnership or having obtained in an institution of these countries a university degree or equivalent. This includes the possibility of providing mobility opportunities to third-country nationals working in public administration and public and private enterprises.

Target Group 3

Nationals of the third-countries concerned by the geographical lot who are in particularly vulnerable situations. It may cover mobility for students holding the nationality of one of the third-countries concerned and:

  1. having a refugee status or asylum beneficiaries (international or according to the national legislation of one of the European recipient countries) or
  2. it can be proved they have been the object of unjustified expulsion from university on racial, ethnic, religious, political, gender or sexual inclination or
  3. they belong to an indigenous population targeted by a specific national policy.

So if you belong to one of the three target groups mentioned above you can apply for a scholarship.

Eligible Asian countries that are covered by the geographical lot are:

  • Afghanistan
  • Bangladesh
  • Bhutan
  • Cambodia
  • China
  • India
  • Indonesia
  • Malaysia
  • Maldives
  • Myanmar/Burma
  • Nepal
  • North Korea
  • Pakistan
  • Philippines
  • Sri Lanka
  • Thailand

Please note that in both ITC application forms it should be clear that you apply for EMMA funding!

When to apply?
As soon as possible. Application deadline is 28th February 2009.

What are the admission criteria?
The admission requirement are:

  • Academic performance
  • Motivation
  • Language capacity to follow the courses
  • Gender balance
  • Level of vulnerability and socio-economical status
  • Student commitment to go back to his/her home institution
